| El Negrito is an area close to Oki near Comayagua. They are not as far up the mountain as Oki but had the same problems, no clean water and no school. Imagine not having these two essentials in your life. The water source that the 400 plus villagers of El Negrito used was down a steep hill. It was standing, stagnant water that was shared with animals. It was filthy water that was not fit for use by humans. They had lived like this for generations.
We met with the entire village in June of 2007. We asked each adult to stand up and tell us why they wanted to have us help with a water project and how their family would help. It was very humbling to hear their testimonials of their lives and their determination to make the project become a reality. Amigos comitted to funding the project and the village committed to doing the labor. Carol and Francisco each committed to do the engineering and fiscal planning. It is interesting to note that there is no electricity to help facilitate this work
December of 2007 marked the huge celebration as we visited. The village had a great party to officially drop the first bucket at the main village washbasin. The village had succeeded in laying over two miles of pipe in some of the roughest terrain imaginable. We had rice and beans and gave out prizes and candy. Everyone from the village was there dressed up in their best clothes. We had a small presentation and announced that we would then fund a school. The tears of joy were everywhere throughout the celebration.
June of 2008 was the date of the inaguration of the new school and Amigos of Honduras Kinder. The Honduran government was represented, the local television media and about 200 people of the village. The school looked great! There are now about 70 kids attending school between the kinder and elementary. It was so rewarding!
In the space of one year from June 2007 to June 2008 the village completed their water project and a school! What a miracle!
